10 lives lost in four road accidents

Date:

Amritsar/Tarn Taran, Jan 2: Ten persons were killed in four road accidents in the border districts of Amritsar and Tarn Taran on Monday.

Five car-borne persons, including two children, died on the Beas flyover here today after the vehicle crashed into a sugarcane-loaded trailer from the rear. The car driver was caught by surprise when a hook attaching the trailer to a tractor broke.

The deceased were identified as Surjit Singh (70), Japjot Singh (4), his mother Simranjit Kaur (32), Gurpreet Kaur and Noor (3). The injured — Harwinder Singh, Prem Kaur and car driver Karnail Singh — were admitted to nearby hospitals. The passengers belonged to the Sodhal road area in Jalandhar, while the driver is a resident of Pandori village.

Harsandeep Singh, SHO, Beas police station, said the cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained. He added that the statements of the family members were yet to be recorded.
Baljinder Singh, tehsildar, who reached the spot, said the bodies would be handed over to the family after a post-mortem examination tomorrow.

Three persons, including a couple from Moga, were killed in an accident. The couple was identified as Bhagwan Das (63) and wife Saroj Rani (60). Harnek Singh, the driver of their Swift, died too. The couple’s daughter, Smile, sustained serious injuries. The family was on its way to Radha Soami Satsang Beas. When they reached near Rasulpur village, a speeding truck collided head-on with the car in the dense fog.
Truck driver Jasbir Singh Dudhala, an Amritsar resident, was booked under Sections 304-A, 279, 427, 337 and 338 of the IPC.

Ranjit Singh (30) died and his cousin, Sukhchain Singh, was injured in a mishap near Doburji village on the Tarn Taran-Amritsar road last evening. Ranjit and Sukhchain were going to Gurdwara Tahla Sahib when an Indica collided head-on with their motorcycle. Both were taken to Ranjit Hospital, Amritsar, where Ranjit succumbed to injuries. Car driver Ravinderjit Singh, a resident of Landeke (Moga), has been booked.

Harcharan Singh (75), a granthi of the gurdwara at Cooperative Sugar Mills, Sheron, died in an accident near his native village, Piddi. He was returning home on a bicycle when an unidentified vehicle hit him and sped away.
