Chandigarh, August 15: This week is very crucial for the health of 10-year-old rape survivor, who is now 35 weeks pregnant.
Admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital last week, she is likely to undergo caesarian section in the next couple of days, said sources.
“Doctors are planning to perform elective (scheduled) caesarian section on the girl, as neither her pelvic bones are strong enough to push the baby nor she will be able to bear the labour pain (in case of natural delivery),” said a highly placed source in the hospital.
The girl’s blood pressure reportedly shot up suddenly, but doctors managed to bring it under control.
“The delivery will take place this week, most likely within a day or two,” said the hospital official. “Doctors were planning to operate the child but her blood pressure shot up. So the delivery had to be delayed.”
“The girl is fine,” said GMCH director-principal Dr AK Janmeja. “We have formed an experts team, which includes gynaecologists, paediatrician, psychiatrist, anaesthesiologist, dietician and experts from forensic medicine, to take care of the 10-year-old.”
While the delivery date is approaching, Dr Alka Sehgal, one of the senior-most gynaecologists at the hospital has chosen to maintain a distance from the case. She was part of the experts committee formed by the medical superintendent.
“The child is not under my unit (Unit-1),” she told HT. “It was because of the order of the Supreme Court that I was both legally and ethically bound to handle the issue.”
Meanwhile, Dr Poonam Goel, who was on leave, has been asked to join work and handle the critical case.
The 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her maternal uncle repeatedly over several months. The crime came to light when she was found to be 30 weeks pregnant on being taken to hospital on complaining of stomach ache last month. Hearing a public interest litigation, the Supreme Court refused to allow termination of her pregnancy on basis of a report submitted by a team of doctors from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).
