Chandigarh, December 22: Punjab excise department’s mobile wing has seized 140 cartons of country-made illicit liquor on Thursday in Zirakpur. The liquor was being smuggled into Mohali. The police recovered illicit liquor of Saunf Ras and Himmat Santra Brand from a tempo traveller.
According to the media reports, it was the 8th lot of the illicit liquor that has been intercepted and seized by the team till now. The Assistant Commissioner of State Tax, mobile wing Chandigarh, Shalin Walia, said, “We have zero tolerance policy towards smuggling of liquor into Punjab. We had received specific information that Chandigarh-made liquor was being brought into Punjab. On detecting the smugglers, our team chased them and intercepted the vehicle in a Zirakpur market.”
State Tax Officer Ashok Chalotra told that they chased the tempo traveller before intercepting the vehicle in Zirakpur. They began chasing the vehicle, which was transporting illegal liquor, from Chandigarh. The team first spotted the vehicle and started following it. The moment the vehicle entered Zirakpur, the driver started driving on the wrong side of the road.
The vehicle driver tried to elope by taking advantage of the busy market, but it was foiled by the team. The team then continued to chase the vehicle in the dark and finally nabbed the smugglers. The liquor was then handed over to the Zirakpur police and case under Section 61(1) and 72 of Punjab Excise Act 1914 was registered at the at Police Station Baltana in Zirakpur.
