2-kg heroin under car seat: US-based NRI arrested for drug peddling in Ludhiana

Ludhiana, Jan 23:  rural police arrested an NRI settled at New Jersey in the US for drug peddling after 2-kg heroin was recovered under the seat of his car, a Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, at a naka at Malak Chowk, Jagraon, on Saturday night.

Three accomplices of the accused — Amarjit Singh, a native of Mukandpur village in Dehlon tehsil in the district — escaped. Police claim the accused had smuggled the contraband from Jammu and Kashmir.

Arrested after a chase

Amarjit was arrested after high drama as the car did not stop at the naka. The police gave chase, arrested the accused and recovered the heroin. Ludhiana, rural, SSP Surjit Singh said, “Amarjit is an NRI settled in New Jersey, US, with family. He migrated to the US in 1988, returned 18 months ago, and took to drug peddling.”

He added, “The accused went to J&K to smuggle heroin in 2016, where he was arrested by Gangiyal police along with his accomplices. Then, the police had recovered ₹8 lakh and heroin from them. He got bail and started peddling again. He told us that he had bought the 2-kg heroin from that state and was on the way to sell it to addicts.”

A case has been registered under sections 21/61/85 of the NDPS Act at the Sudhar police station against Amarjit and three unidentified accomplices. Recently, Police arrested a J&K police officer, Mohammad Rafiq, with poppy husk.
