2 priests arrested for illegal sale of pistols

Sangrur, February 28: The police arrested the priests of two temples on Monday night for the illegal sale of pistols in the district. The police have also arrested a person who had purchased a pistol from one of the priests.

Five other persons, who had purchased pistols from these priests, have also been identified.

Sangrur SSP Mandeep Sidhu today said on a tip-off, the Dirba police arrested Bhagwan Dass, priest of Thakur Dwara temple, Sunam, and Lekhraj, priest of Shiv temple of Khadial village.

Both belong to Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. During a search, the police seized two pistols and two cartridges from them. Both were allegedly going to supply the weapons on a motorcycle bearing a fake number.

“After getting the input, our police team arrested another person, Avtar Singh from Chhajli village, who had purchased a pistol from Bhagwan Dass. We have also identified five more purchasers of illegal pistols from them,” said SSP Sidhu.

“Both have stayed in various temples of Punjab. We are conducting thorough investigations to detect the exact number of pistols they have sold. They were selling pistols in the range of Rs 3,500 to Rs 15,000,” said SSP Sidhu.
