Fatehgarh Sahib, April 20: Two students of BSc Agriculture of Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib, died on the spot and three others were seriously injured when the car in which they were travelling overturned after hitting an electricity pole near the old railway overbridge at Sirhind town in the wee hours.
The deceased have been identified as Satnam Singh, a resident of Doraha town, and Sukhdeep Singh, a resident of Chamkaur Sahib in Ropar.
Gurpreet Singh Bajwa, SHO, Fatehgarh Sahib, said that after taking dinner, the five students of Mata Gujri College were going to a petrol station at Sirhind town at about 1 am on Thursday.
After crossing the old railway overbridge at Sirhind, Satnam, who was driving the car, lost control. On hitting a roadside electricity pole, the car overturned, killing Satnam and Sukhdeep on the spot. A passerby informed the police. The police rushed to the spot and took the three injured — Kamalpreet Singh, a resident of Ludhiana; Rishi, a resident of Barnala; and Lovepreet Singh, a resident of Mansa; to civil hospital, Fatehgarh Sahib. After first aid, they were referred to Chandigarh where their condition is out of danger.
The SHO said that the bodies were handed over to the family members after post-mortem examination. Dr Kashmir Singh, Principal, Mata Gujri College, expressed grief over the incident. The staff and students observed silence and prayed for the departed souls.
