3 arrested for smuggling 4,920 liquor bottles in Moga

Date:

Moga, September 10: The police on Sunday seized 410 boxes (4,920 bottles), which were smuggled from Chandigarh, and arrested four smugglers.

Excise officials said a case under the Excise Act was registered and four smugglers, Balraj Singh, Shiv Kumar, Jagjit Singh and Simrandeep Singh, were arrested from the spot.

Earlier this month, more than 380 boxes of smuggled liquor were seized in separate cases.

Sources said a portion of the smuggled liquor came from either Chandigarh or Haryana where the rates are much lower than Punjab and a large portion is sold in bulk by local contractors through their agents in the areas of their rival contractors. Some contractors in Moga have smuggled a huge quantity of liquor through illegal means at cheap rates without paying the excise duty.

Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Moga, Jagtar Singh said the department was making all efforts to curb liquor smuggling. Eight teams of the department had randomly checked at least 50 liquor vends in Moga district.
