5 Dalits held for Phagwara clashes

Phagwara, May 17: The police on Wednesday arrested five Dalits Ambedkar Sena Mool Niwasi president Harbhajan Suman, Baljinder Kumar, Sanjiv Kumar, Davinder Deep and Pardeep Ambedkeri for their involvement in April 13 Phagwara clashes.

They had been booked under Sections 353, 186, 283, 188, 160, 148 and 149 of the IPC and Section 3 of the Punjab Prevention of Damage to Public and Private Property Act-2014 and the city police station, Phagwara, on April 13 midnight.

Harkamal preet Singh Khakh, AIG, said all the five persons were arrested due to their involvement in April 13 communal clashes. They were produced before the Judicial Magistrate, who remanded them in the judicial custody till May 25.

Meanwhile, SP Parminder Singh Bhandal said the police had arrested four other persons, identified as Bobby, Rohit, Surinder and Yogesh (all residents of Palahai Gate). They were produced before the Judicial Magistrate, who sent them to seven-day judicial custody.
