Shimla, August 13: Landslides left three persons dead in Mandi district while traffic was disrupted on several highways as rain fury led to havoc in various parts of Himachal on Monday.
Three people were reportedly killed in Mandi district due to landslide incidents at several places. National Highway Mandi-Kullu was blocked near Blueli and Mandi-Pathankot has been blocked at several places owing to landslides. The alternate routes of Mandi-Pathankot National Highway were also blocked.
Five persons were reportedly buried under massive landslide near Chakla village in Kandaghat. One casualty reported so far. Several landslides occurred on the Parwanoo-Solan stretch of National Highway-22 owing to torrential rains in the area since last night. A major landslide was reported near Chakki Ka Mor early this morning, which led to closure of the road. Labour was deployed by the private company engaged in four-laning this highway to clear the muck.
A school boy hailing from Rani village near Parwanoo slipped and fell into swollen Kaushalya river and is feared to have been washed away. He was accompanied by his grandfather who watched his grandson being swept by strong currents helplessly.
The continuing landslides pose risk to life of the people and Deputy Commissioners ordered closure of government and private schools in worst affected districts of Shimla, Solan, Mandi, Kullu, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kinnaur, Chamba and Lahaul and Spiti for today.
Gushing waters entered low-line slum areas. A portion of a bridge was damaged due to heavy rainfall in Hamirpur district.
Most of the roads in interior of Shimla district have been closed due to landslides but no loss of life was reported. In Shimla, Vikasnagar and Khalani road was blocked due to uprooting of trees. Traffic was disrupted near Tara Devi and Tawi Chowk and swirling rain water a nallah near Marina Hotel in Shimla flooding the road.
Chamba-Pathankot national Highway blocked by landslides at Panjpula. Also, several interior roads were blocked in Chamba.
Heavy down pour occurred at many places and Sujanpur Tira and Mandi recorded 238 mm and 235 mm of rains till 7:30 this morning while Shimla had 172.6 mm of rains, highest during the season. Jubbarhatti received 146.2 mm of rains followed by Jwali 136 mm, Kasauli 134 mm, Bharwain119 mm, Solan 110 mm.
