5 held for illegal mining in Bathinda

Bathinda, March 10: The Bathinda police on Friday arrested five persons for carrying out illegal sand mining at Vishwas Nagar. Three tractor-trailers loaded with sand were seized. One of the accused is absconding.

A case under Section 21 of the Mining Act, 379 and 188 of the IPC has been registered against them at the Canal Colony police station.

The accused were mining the land that had been taken on lease. Those arrested were identified as Harminder Singh, Karamjeet Singh, Sukhdev Singh, Akash Kumar and Pala Singh. Ramesh Kumar, father of Akash, is absconding.
Addressing mediapersons, Devinder Singh, SHO of the Canal Colony police station, said that acting on a tip-off, the police conducted a raid.

Harminder and Karamjeet had taken some land on lease near Gurukul College at Vishwas Nagar. On finding sand there, they started mining and arranged tractor-trailers from Sukhdev Singh, Akash and Pala Singh, all owners of tractor-trailers.

SHO Devinder Singh said that the accused had also taken land on lease near the thermal plant where too they were carrying out mining. The accused would be produced in court tomorrow, he added.
According to sources, local residents had made a video of the mining and had sent it to senior police officials after which the police conducted the raid.
