Patiala, January 6: Serial killer Jagroop Singh (44), who had committed at least seven murders over the past two decades, landed in the police net on Friday.
Jagroop, a resident of Ludhiana, told the police that he was a sex maniac who had an extra-marital relationship with several women. The husbands of two of them were among his victims.
Last week, he murdered Ludhiana native Rajinder Singh in Model Town here and mutilated the deceased’s face to prevent identification. Patiala SSP S Bhupathi said: “Jagroop’s paramour Hema had complained to him that Rajinder sexually harassed her. She handed over sedative pills to the accused on the night of December 29. He mixed these in alcohol and had a drink with Rajinder, following which he battered him to death with bricks.”
A caterer’s visiting card, found at the spot, led the cops to Ludhiana, where Jagroop’s neighbours told them that he had returned home at 3 am on December 30 and washed his (bloodstained) clothes in the wee hours.
It started with a robbery in 1995, when Jagroop barged into a house in Shimlapuri area with his accomplices and murdered a woman. In 1998, he killed a migrant woman at Baddowal. He was arrested, but acquitted by a court in 2003. Later, he started working as an autorickshaw driver in Ludhiana. He started an affair with Paramjit Kaur of Yamunanagar (Haryana). “In 2004, he strangled her husband, Kuldeep Singh, packed his body in a trunk and threw it into the Yamuna,” said Patiala DIG Sukhchain Singh Gill.
At Paramjit’s behest, Jagroop killed Patiala resident Vikas with a sword as the latter had objected to her involvement in the flesh trade.
He then befriended Ludhiana resident Hema and murdered her husband, Nand Lal, after offering him drinks. In 2016, he murdered Paramjit when she objected to his relationship with Hema.
The police said Jagroop had so far confessed to committing seven murders. The cops are trying to ascertain if he was involved in other crimes too.
