8,257 cases of ‘enforced disappearances’ & fake encounters in state during 1980s and 1995: Report

Date:

New Delhi, December 12: An investigation by an advocacy group into mass disappearances between 1980s and 1995 during the worst phase of terrorism in Punjab, says evidence has emerged of 8,257 cases of ‘enforced disappearances’ and fake encounters in the state during the period.

The probe carried out by the Punjab Documentation and Advocacy Project (PDAP), has been summarised into a report that will be submitted to the Supreme Court. The report, based on a seven-year probe, also claims 5,648 mass cremations took place in the period between 1984-1995 of unidentified and unclaimed bodies in this trouble-torn period in the state.

Called ‘Identifying the Unidentified’, the record chronicles thousands of previously “unknown, unclaimed, unidentified mass cremations from records recently obtained,” said a PDAP statement.
