’84 riots: Sajjan lie-detector test on May 30

Date:

New Delhi, May 15: A local court on Monday ordered former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar to undergo a lie-detector test on May 30 in connection with a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

The matter pertains to the killing of Sohan Singh and his son-in-law Avtar Singh in the Janakpuri area and setting Gurcharan Singh afire in the Vikaspuri area. Gurcharan died three years later.

Kumar gave his consent for the test, saying he was willing to undergo it either in India or abroad and would bear the expenses. The judge recorded his consent.

The test would be conducted at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Lodhi Road.

The special investigation team (SIT) had alleged that Kumar was not cooperating. His counsel, however, countered that the SIT claim was not right because Kumar’s assent was mandatory.

They said Kumar was named for the first time as an accused in the case in 2016 and he joined the probe. Kumar was granted interim bail by a lower court in December 2016. The High Court on February 22 turned down the SIT plea to cancel it.
