Sangrur, April 30: Shaheed Udham Singh Government College, Sunam, has only one washroom for its 850 girl students while its different parts need urgent repair. The government has sanctioned Rs 2 crore for the renovation of the college.
As per sources, there are around 2,370 students in the college out of which 850 are girls. The college caters to the needs of 81 villages of Sangrur district. Presently, BA, BSc, BCom, MA (history) and PGDCA courses are being run by the college.
But the college has been without the required infrastructure for the past many years as the authorities say they have not received financial help from the Punjab Government.“The only washroom is in the common room of girls while in other parts of the college, there is no washroom for girls.
All girl students have to visit the common room if they want to use the washroom but for most of the time, it remains occupied and students have to wait. Sometimes, they also miss their classes,” said a girl student.
Sunam constituency in charge Daman Thind Bajwa, who lost the Assembly election to AAP’s Aman Arora, and district Congress chief Raja Beerkalan said they had conducted a survey of the college and prepared a special report for funds.
“On the directions of Captain Amarinder Singh, the Education Department has sanctioned Rs 2 crore to the college,” the leaders said.
College Principal Sukhbir Singh Thind said many parts of the college needed immediate repair and their first priority was to construct washrooms for girls.“With Rs 2-crore grant, we will construct the required washrooms for girls. Apart from it, we will undertake repair of rooms and construct a new Punjabi block.
We will send our project report to the authorities at the earliest so that work can be started immediately,” he said.
