Chandigarh, July 14: Punjab jails have no programme for reforming or rehabilitating its inmates.
General secretary of the AAP Dinesh Chadha, spokesperson Jastej Singh and treasurer Sukhwinder Sukhi said in a press conference here on Friday that as per the information received under the RTI Act, the government did not have any concrete policy to rehabilitate the prisoners.
They said information received from the Central Jail, Ludhiana, revealed that there was no programme for reorientation of the criminals.
The Central Jail, Patiala, reported that it ran a yoga training programme where only one inmate taught yoga to 525 inmates, whereas the jail had 1,801 prisoners.
No other jail had reported any counselling or religious education programme for the prisoners, they said.
They said many jails had more inmates than their capacity. As many as 1,215 male prisoners were lodged in the Central Jail, Ferozepur, against the capacity of 1,100.
They said the Central Jail, Jalandhar (Kapurthala), had a capacity of 120 females, whereas 161 were lodged therein. The Central Jail, Hoshiarpur, had a capacity of 45 female inmates, but it housed 51 female prisoners. As many as 98 female inmates were lodged in the Central Jail, Sangrur, against the sanctioned capacity of 32 inmates. The Central Jail, Rupnagar, had the capacity of 25 female inmates, but it had 46 inmates, they said.
