Abohar farmers protest cancellation of blue cards

Date:

Abohar, August 7: Residents of various villages in Abohar and Balluana segments on Monday staged a protest outside the Food and Supplies Department office near the railway goods yard in Abohar against the cancellation of blue cards. They alleged that the department had cancelled the cards of hundreds of families below the poverty line in an arbitrary manner.

Dehati Majdoor Sabha president Jagga Singh and Jaimal Ram, president, Jamhoori Kisan Sabha, flayed the authorities for deleting the cards without visiting the houses of beneficiaries for physical verification and urged the state government to immediately take steps to issue new ration cards.

They said the cancellation of ration cards had deprived the villagers of benefits under the public distribution system (PDS) and the Food Security Act. Later, they submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister to the local authorities. The NGOs demanded that landless labourers should be listed in the category of BPL families.

The organisers said they would stage a dharna for the next two days too outside the office of Sub Divisional Magistrate besides the office of Assistant Food and Supply Controller.
