Abohar, October 28: Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu launched the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) Yojana here on Friday.
Sidhu said “criminal neglect” in development by then SAD-BJP government had pushed Abohar town to the bottom, with the national Swachhta Survekshan listing it as the dirtiest town in the state.
“Our government will leave no stone unturned to bring this town on the top-10 list,” he told a gathering in a slum of Thakur Abadi.
Sidhu, accompanied by PPCC president and Gurdaspur MP Sunil Jakhar, inaugurated the scheme under which Rs 92.10 crore has been earmarked for the sewer system and Rs 27.06 crore for drinking water supply. A sum of Rs 44.44 crore has been provided for maintenance work over 10 years.
Sidhu said Jakhar had promised before the Assembly polls to get development works worth Rs 500 crore sanctioned in five years for Abohar. “The Chief Minister has given the nod to honour Jakhar’s word. I adopt this area for development and promise to arrange the required amount,” the minister said.
