Armed men attack driver, take away SUV in Zirakpur

Date:

Mohali, February 5: Two armed assailants allegedly made away with a government employee’s Toyota Fortuner outside West Wood Resort in Zirakpur on Saturday night.

The police said the car owner, Vikram Chopra, a resident of Sector 43, Chandigarh, along with his family, was attending a neighbour’s function at the resort, while his driver Rahul Kumar was waiting in his SUV parked on the roadside outside the venue.

In his statement to the police, Rahul said around 10:30pm, a man forcibly entered the car, pointed a revolver at his chest and demanded the car keys. Before he could react, another man approached his window, and hit him on the head with his gun’s butt, he alleged.

Rahul claimed that he somehow managed to make good his escape, following which the duo made off with the vehicle, with his mobile phone still in it. The police said the driver had described the accused as well dressed.

While one of the accused was wearing a cap and was tall and slim, the other was short and stout, Rahul said. Zirakpur station house officer (SHO) Pawan Kumar said, “We traced the vehicle’s location to Industrial Area, Phase 1, Chandigarh, with the help of the driver’s mobile phone location.”

“We have tied up with the Chandigarh Police to crack the case. We carried out searches at various establishments in Industrial Area, including Elante mall, to trace the car, but in vain,” he added.

Vikram said a friend of his elder son Yashan informed them on Sunday afternoon that he spotted their car on the Kalagram-Sector 26 road in Chandigarh around 10:45pm on Saturday. He said the car was being driven rashly, but he didn’t suspect anything then, Vikram added.

A case under Section 382 (theft after preparation made for causing death, hurt or restraint in order to the committing of the theft) and relevant sections of the Arms Act has been registered at the Zirakpur police station.
