Chandigarh, Feb 8: Accused of having killed former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, Jagtar Singh Tara, who has been in jail since 2015, wants his family to know how he looks currently. Tara, hence, has moved an application in a court seeking permission to get clicked inside Burail Jail so that his latest photograph could be provided to his kin.
Taking cognisance of his appeal, the court of additional district and sessions judge JS Sidhu on Wednesday issued a notice to the jail authorities and sought reply by February 19.
Meanwhile, the court also handed over the copy of a six-page confession letter of Tara to the CBI counsel. Tara’s counsel Simranjeet Singh argued that his family members had photographs of that time when he was arrested from Thailand in January 2015, when he was clean-shaven.
It was stated that Tara has grown full beard and also wears a turban regularly and wanted his family to get his latest picture with turbaned look. During the resumed hearing of the case, CBI counsel SK Saxena put 29 questions to Tara regarding the role of various persons in Beant Singh’s assassination.
The court also handed over the copy of confession letter of Tara to CBI counsel in which he had justified the assassination and how he had no regrets whatsoever about the same. Tara, along with two other accused, had fled from Burail Jail while the trial in the main case was on. In February 2004, non-bailable warrants were issued against him and in May the same year, he was declared a proclaimed offender.
Beant Singh was killed in an explosion outside the civil secretariat in Chandigarh on August 31, 1995. A Punjab police employee Dilawar Singh had acted as human bomb in incident.
