Bluestar: SGPC chief asks radicals not to vitiate peace

Date:

Amritsar, June 4: The SGPC on Monday commenced an “Akhand Path” at Akal Takht to observe Operation Bluestar anniversary. The bhog will be held on June 6.

Seeking damages from the Centre, the SGPC had preserved various bullet-riddled structures and a “saroop” of Guru Granth Sahib that were damaged during the Army operation at the Golden Temple.

SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal appealed to the Sikh community, especially radical elements, to commemorate the occasion in a peaceful manner.

He attended the “ardas” performed by head priest of Akal Takht Malkit Singh. Jathedar of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib Giani Raghbir Singh read out the “hukumnama”.

Anticipating trouble from parallel jathedars, Longowal said: “I appeal to Dhian Singh Mand and his aides to maintain peace.

Only the appointed Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh reserves the right to address the Sikh community from Akal Takht. We have made adequate arrangement in collaboration with the police and the administration to deal with any untoward incident.” The SGPC is fighting a legal battle in the Delhi High Court to claim a compensation of Rs 1,000 crore from the Centre for the damage caused to the shrine. The case is still pending.
