Sangrur, May 5: The Public Works Department (PWD) approved a plan of Rs 2.10 crore to reconstruct a four decades’ old bridge over a drain on the Ubhawal-Longowal road on Thursday.
Portions of the bridge are crumbling due to ever-rising traffic.Senior officers said when the bridge was constructed the traffic was not so heavy.
But with the passage of time, the traffic increased and the bridge needed to be strengthened immediately to avert any mishap.
“Residents are scared of using the bridge as its railing has also started falling.
It needs to be reconstructed with more width keeping in view the increase in traffic on the road,” said Kulwant Singh, a Longowal resident.Punjab Congress spokesperson and leader from Sunam Daman Thind Bajwa, who have been struggling for the reconstruction of the bridge, said the Punjab government approved Rs 2.10 crore for the reconstruction of the bridge on Thursday.
When contacted, Punjab PWD & IT Minister Vijay Inder Singla said he would take required steps to ensure the early completion of the project.“I have directed the officers concerned to start the work at the earliest,” said Singla.
