Cabinet revives defunct prison dept posts to strengthen jail security & surveillance

Date:

Chandigarh, March 7: In a bid to strengthen prison management and surveillance, the Punjab Cabinet on Wednesday approved the revival of 305 posts of warders and 20 posts of Assistant Superintendents in the Jail Department.

The decision, aimed at providing the prison authorities with sufficient manpower to further secure the jails, was taken at a meeting of the cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh here at the Punjab Bhawan.

Giving details about the revival of prison posts, the spokesperson said these posts had been deemed to be abolished as they had been lying vacant for more than six months. The cabinet considered it necessary to revive them in order to augment the prison strength to prevent recurrence of Nabha jail break kind of incidents and Gurdaspur Central Jail type of riots. The recruitment for these posts will be done by DG Punjab Police.

The Cabinet also gave its nod to the appointment of Everest summiteer Prithvi Singh Chahal as DSP in Punjab Police, as a special case, an official spokesperson disclosed after the meeting.

The appointment is in line with the state government’s commitment to promote sports and provide job avenues to sportspersons. As the youngest mountaineer to scale Mt. Everest, which he conquered at the tender age of 17 years, 1 month and 23 days, Chahal’s case was deemed special as the cabinet felt it would encourage adventure sports in the state.

This is the second such decision by the cabinet, which had, on August 24, okayed the appointment of woman cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur as a DSP in Punjab Police department.
