Canada Sikh woman inducted as cabinet minister in Ontario

Date:

Chandigarh, Jan 18:  Harinder Kaur Malhi, an Indian-origin Canadian MPP, has been inducted as a cabinet minister in the Kathleen Wynne ministry of Canada’s Ontario province.

She will now be the minister for women’s status.

Harinder is the daughter of Gurbakhsh Singh Malhi, a former Canadian MP. A liberal member of the legislative assembly of Ontario, Harinder was elected in 2014.

She represents the riding (as constituencies are called in Canada) of Brampton, Springdale. The Malhi family originally belongs to Chugha Kalan village situated in Moga district of Punjab.

In 2017, the Ontario Assembly became the first legislature in Canada to carry a motion that described the 1984 anti-Sikh riots as “genocide”. The private members’ motion was moved by Harinder Malhi.
