Chandigarh, June 7: Chandigarh residents will no longer have to shell out heavy amounts to reach office or college daily, with the idea of bike taxis, popularly known as baxis, coming to the city soon.
The project will start in a month.
Rajiv Tewari, the State Transport Authority secretary, says, “The transport department is finalising the policy regarding baxis. It won’t take more than a month.”
The fare of baxi will be determined on the basis of time and distance covered.
BAXI OR TAXI?
The idea has received a mixed response from residents.
The baxis will be cost-effective and will come with an additional factor of saving time by beating traffic. It is expected to be most useful for single commuters in the city.
The idea is to have tie-ups with major taxi operators such as Uber and Ola, to ensure success of the scheme.
Motorcycle owners will be able to get commercial permits and licence for two-wheeler taxis.
