Charanjit Channi unveils Bhim Raj Garg’s book on Punjabi cinema

Chandigarh, November 22: “The Punjabi cinema has a rich history. Punjabi cinema has played a pivotal role in bringing forth social and economic lifestyle of the people of the region. In present times, it is scaling newer heights.”

Cultural and Tourism Minister Punjab Charanjit Singh Channi said this at Press Club today.

He was speaking during a function organised to unveil acclaimed film historian Bhim Raj Garg’s book ‘The Illustrated History of Punjabi Cinema1935-1985’.

The event was organised by North Zone Film and TV Artistes Association.

The Minister further said that this book will act as a stepping stone for younger generations to acquaint them with history of Punjabi cinema. He also divulged that the Punjabi cinema has gone through many phases and the filmmakers have taken the unbeaten path to create new avenues, which he said was a appreciable step.

Mr. Channi also announced Rs. 5 Lakhs for the association in recognition of its efforts in promoting Punjabi language.

The minister also said that he would undertake efforts to ensure the book which is a repository of knowledge, is available in libraries across state schools and colleges.

Congratulating the author, Mr. Channi lauded him for his hardwork of 36 long years.

Speaking on the occasion, President of the association Gurpreet Ghuggi welcomed the Minister adding that it was our joint responsibility to take Punjabi language to newer heights. The State Government can play a vital role in this, he added. Yograj Singh thanked the Chief guest and all those present on the occasion.

Prominent amongst those present on the occasion included the author Bhim Raj Garg and Mandeep Sidhu, Vijay Tandon, Nirmal Rishi, Sardar Sohi, B. N. Sharma, Gurpreet Kaur Bhangoo and Japji Khaira.
