Sangrur, April 13: Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh failed to attend the state-level debt waiver function at Rampura village in the district on Thursday, citing a “last-minute technical glitch” in the official helicopter. The CM is yet to attend an official function in the district after the Congress came to power in March last year.
Farmers from the districts of Sangrur, Barnala, Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, SAS Nagar and Rupnagar were among the 73,748 beneficiaries of debt relief to the tune of Rs 485.69 crore. Finance Minister Manpreet Badal handed over debt waiver certificates to 14 farmers, even as a majority of the people started leaving the venue after he announced that the CM would not turn up.
“As per the commitment of our party, all debts will be waived in due course,” Manpreet said. State Congress chief Sunil Jakhar sought ‘kurki’ of properties of affluent politicians who were not paying their farm debt.
Congress MLA Vijay Inder Singla sought a government medical college in Sangrur, funds for sports infrastructure, and the construction of the trauma centre at the Community Health Centre, Bhawanigarh. Manpreet promised prompt action.
Rural Development and Panchayats Minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa announced a grant of Rs 25 lakh for the upgrade of the Rampura sports stadium. PWD Minister Razia Sultana, Forests and Welfare Minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, former Union Minister Preneet Kaur and former CM Rajinder Kaur Bhattal were also present.
