Cong leader alleges assault by party MLA’s supporters

Date:

Sangrur, July 18: Senior vice-president of district Congress Harmandeep Badla has alleged that supporters of Amargarh MLA Surjit Dhiman assaulted him near Sanghala village here on Tuesday. The Congress legislator has refuted the charge.

In his complaint to the Dhuri Sadar police, Badla alleged that Pavitar Singh, who claims to be the Congress media incharge of Amargarh block, led the attack. He claimed that his car was intercepted near Sanghala and Pavitar, along with Dipi, Goldy and two unidentified persons, attacked him with baseball bats and sharp weapons.

“Pavitar had been threatening me at the instance of MLA Dhiman as I did not support the latter in the last elections. If anything happens to me or my family, the MLA should be held responsible,” said Badla, who is undergoing treatment at the Sangrur civil hospital.

Pavitar Singh claimed, “I am Congress media incharge for the Amargarh block. Why would I attack our vice president? In fact, Badla had attacked Pardeep Singh, one of our party workers, and fled. When we stopped his car and asked him the reason, he abused us and drove off.”

Goldy, who is out on bail in a murder case, claimed that he was confined to bed after an accident four days ago.
District Congress committee chief Raja Beerkalan and the MLA denied having appointed Pavitar as the media incharge.
MLA Surjit Dhiman said, “Badla is levelling baseless allegations against me at the behest of my political opponents. I have no connection with Pavitar.”

Harwinder Singh Khaira, SHO, Dhuri Sadar police station, said they had started investigations into the complaint.
