Congress MPs protest ‘MSP farce’

Date:

New Delhi, July 20: Congress MPs from Punjab staged a protest outside the Lok Sabha in New Delhi on Thursday against what they termed as the government’s “MSP farce”. The MPs alleged that though the government had claimed massive hikes in MSP, farmers were getting lower than the previous MSP rates.

“Crops are selling below the MSP. The Narendra Modi Government has announced MSP raise, which is a farce,” Gurdaspur MP Sunil Jakhar said. He said farmers were selling their maize at a rate of Rs 1,000 below the MSP of Rs 1,725 a quintal announced by the Punjab Government.

Ludhiana MP Ravneet Bittu, Santokh Choudhry (Jalandhar) and Gurjit Singh Aujla (Amritsar) also took part in the protest. They demanded proper funding and procurement plans for the MSP hikes to become effective.
