Congress councillor’s son surrenders in murder case

Date:

Ludhiana, July 23: Three days after the murder of 22-year-old BJP worker Rinkal Khera in Amarpura, prime accused Jatinderpal Singh Sunny, son of local Congress councillor Gurdeep Singh Neetu, surrendered before the police on Sunday.

When the victim’s family members were told that Sunny had been taken into custody, they initially gave their nod to a post-mortem examination. Later, they backtracked and demanded that the councillor should also be arrested.

Ashwani Kapur, DCP, said Sunny would be produced in a court for securing his police remand to get information about the assailants’ whereabouts.

Sources said Sunny had surrendered due to political intervention.

Meanwhile, local MP Ravneet Bittu, MLAs Surinder Dawar and Sanjay Talwar met the family of the deceased and assured that no culprit would be spared.

“I conveyed to Police Commissioner Sukhchain Singh Gill to pursue the case on merit and bring the culprits to book, even if they belong to the Congress. I assured the family that justice will be delivered,” Bittu said.

Dawar said the Opposition was playing politics over the issue, even as the Congress stand was clear that the guilty would not be spared, irrespective of party affiliations.
