New Delhi, August 30: A special CBI court in Delhi extended the Central Bureau of Investigation custody of former union minister P Chidambaram till September 2 in connection with the INX Media case.
Chidambaram was arrested on August 21 by the CBI from his residence in New Delhi’s Jor Bagh and is currently in the agency’s custody. He was produced before the court as his custody expired on Friday.
In 2017, the CBI had registered an FIR alleging irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to INX Media to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when Chidambaram was the Finance Minister.
Following the CBI FIR, Enforcement Directorate (ED) had also filed a case of money laundering against him.
Currently, the CBI is carrying out confrontations between Chidambaram and bureaucrats, who had served under him and were close to him. To that end, the agency has summoned two bureaucrats to join the INX case probe.
Sources in the agency said that it wants him to undergo a lie detection test. The agency can conduct a polygraph test only if the person on whom the test is being conducted has consented to it.
The probe agency is, however, apprehensive if Chidambaram will give it the go-ahead.
