Sangrur Dalit couple alleges torture, SSP orders probe

Date:

Sangrur, August 22: Three days after a police team from Nabha allegedly thrashed a Dalit woman and her husband at Punnawal village and later booked the couple, villagers on Tuesday met the SSP to seek a probe into the case. They alleged that the cops had tried to take the woman into custody without any female cop accompanying them.

The victim, Paramjit Kaur, alleged: “Manjit Singh of Nabha had kept me in illegal confinement in Chandigarh around seven months ago and later in Nabha. On August 16, I managed to escape. But he along with three cops came to my house on August 17, slapped me, my husband and children. He tried to kidnap me with the help of cops.”
Hearing their cries, the villagers converged at the spot and thrashed Manjit Singh. Three videos of incident had gone viral on the social media.

On the complaint of ASI Sadha Singh of Nabha, the police registered a case against Paramjit Kaur, her husband Gurjant Singh, Kali Kaur, her husband Amrik Singh, Bhanta Singh and former sarpanch Bant Singh Punnawal. “Instead of taking action against cops and Manjit, the police registered a false case against us,” alleged Punnawal.
ASI Sadha Singh said they had gone to the village to serve summons to Paramjit Kaur to join investigations as Manjit had lodged a theft complaint against her, but the villagers attacked them.

Sangrur SSP Sandeep Garg said he had directed the SP (Headquarters) for a thorough investigation into the matter.
