Under debt, 64-yr-old farmer ends life

Amritsar, May 13: Partap Singh, a 64-year-old farmer of Odhar village in Chogawan subdivision, allegedly committed suicide on Sunday by consuming celphos tablets.

The family owns 12 acres. His son Jasbir Singh said this father had borrowed Rs 8.5 lakh from a bank and Rs 3.5 lakh from a commission agent. His wife Dawinder Kaur said the family had also incurred losses in agriculture. Members of Odhar panchayat have demanded suitable compensation for the family from the government.
