Under debt, farmer ends life in Muktsar

Muktsar, January 2: A 40-year-old indebted farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree at Daula village near Gidderbaha town today.

Sources said victim Amritpal Singh owed Rs 5 lakh to the cooperative bank and a society. Baljit Kaur, wife of the deceased, said they owned about two acres of agricultural land and the produce was very low. “We had to take some loan, which depressed my husband. He left the house without telling anyone,” she added.

The deceased is survived by his wife, an eight-year-old son and six-year-old daughter.

The police have started inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC and sent the body for a postmortem.
