Don’t underestimate police: Brampton mayor on vandalism of Hindu temples

Brampton, February 26: Days after incidents of reported vandalism at two Hindu temples in Peel region, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said the investigative capacity of the police should not be underestimated.

Brampton’s Gauri Shankar Mandir was reportedly vandalized overnight between Sunday, Jan. 29 and Monday, Jan. 30. Days later, on Feb. 14, Mississauga’s Ram Mandir was also vandalized.

Brown, who was joined by Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief Mark Dapat and local Hindu leaders to address the issue, was asked if the increase in hate-motivated crimes indicated a lack of fear for the police.

“Do not underestimate the investigative capacity of the police. Chief Nish (Nishan Duraiappah) has some of the best investigators and technology available,” Brown said.

Dapat informed officers from the 12 and 22 Division Criminal Investigation units “have been dedicated to investigate and solve the hate-motivated crimes” at the temples.
