Ex-chairman Attari Market Committee, 1 other arrested for drug peddling

Tarn Taran/Chandigarh, August 24: The Tarn Taran police on Saturday arrested two ‘A’ category drug peddlers, including a former Chairman of the Market Committee, Attari, to expose the nexus between drug criminals and the political dispensation during the SAD-BJP regime.

Jasbir Singh was the Market Committee chairman from 2007-2012, and was close to former Minister and SAD MLA from Attari Gulzar Singh Ranike, said SSP Tarn Taran Dhruv Dahiya adding there were nine cases already pending against the accused. His arrest was pending under FIR no. 47/2015 u/s 21/22/27/61/85 NDPS Act, 25/54/59 Arms Act, 3/34/20 IP Act.

Jasbir Singh alias Jassi S/o Chanan Singh, a resident of Cheema Kalan under police station Sarai Amanat Khan, was arrested by the local SHO, said the SSP. The accused was also booked in a case of 1 kg heroin, with FIR no. 82/ 2013 in PS Sarai Amanat Khan, which was still under trial.

One of Jasbir’s sons, Amarbir Singh, was lodged in Ferozepur Jail under a NDPS case, in which 300 gm heroin was recovered. Amarbir Singh is also an accused in five cases of NDPS Act and Arms Act, with maximum recovery of 1 kg heroin. He is currently serving a sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, in FIR no. 155/2015, PS Sadar Ferozepur, under sections of NDPS Act and Arms Act.

Jasbir’s second son, Gurwinder Singh, against whom two FIRs were registered under NDPS Act on smuggling charges, is also now on the run ,after the police raid yesterday. He was likely to be arrested soon.

Jasbir’s arrest would help break the drug supply chain in Sarai Amanat Khan and Chabhal areas, the SSP added.

Disclosing further, Dahiya said that the accused had a total of 13 acres of agricultural property, all of which would be frozen soon, with a case for attachment having already been sent to the Competent Authority in Delhi for forfeiture of the property under the NDPS Act.

Jasbir’s accomplice, Gurpreet Singh S/o Karaj Singh, resident of Dasuwal in police station Sadar, Patti, had also been booked under NDPS Act.

Giving details, Dahiya said 6 kg heroin, a tractor and a motorcycle had been recovered from Jasbir Singh, under police station Sidhwa Bait in Jagraon.

According to the SSP, five cases had been registered against Gurpreet Singh, in Tarn Taran, Amritsar and Ferozepur districts, under the NDPS Act. These included FIR 135/2007, PS Sultanwind with recovery of 3 kg heroin; FIR No.419/2008, PS Sadar Amritsar with recovery of 200 gm intoxicant powder; FIR No. 45/12 at PS Chabal with recovery of 100 gm heroin; FIR No. 36/15, PS Valtoha involving seizure of 270 gm intoxicant powder; and FIR no. 226/13 at PS Ferozepur City.

Detailed interrogation of both the peddlers, along with their call detail record (CDR) analysis, was being carried out to further establish their supply network, said the SSP, adding that action u/s 27A NDPS Act will also be initiated based on the findings of these.
