Sangrur, June 6: Farmers of Gurne Kalan village of the district on Tuesday detained a team of officials of the Punjab Cooperative Agricultural Development Bank (PADB), Lehra, that had arrived to recover loan amount from a farmer for three hours.
“My father had taken a loan of Rs 5 lakh for which the bank officials had been threatening me for the last many days. On Tuesday, when they came to recover the loan amount, I called BKU Ugrahan leaders and apprised them of the situation,” said Sukhjiwan Singh, a farmer.
After getting a call from Sukhjiwan, other farmers from his village and BKU Ugrahan leaders from adjoining villages reached Gurne Kalan village and detained the officials.
“We will not allow bank officials to harass small farmers. They must start recovery from big farmers rather than troubling small farmers. We released the officials after they promised that they will not harass any small farmer in future,” said Dharminder Pashore, Lehragaga block president, BKU (Ugrahan).
However, Lehragaga bank manager Surinder Garg denied the allegation of threatening the farmer.
“On Tuesday, we came only to convince Sukhjiwan to repay the loan that he had taken to construct his house in 2015. We will send the report to our seniors,” he added.
