Muktsar, June 16: After much delay, the authorities have started the renovation work of the Panjab University Regional Centre (PURC) building located on the Tibbi Sahib road here.
The building was declared unsafe a few years ago and some portion of its roof had also collapsed during rain. Though two years ago, it had got a five-acre land next to the Government College and the boundary wall was also constructed, the work was stopped due to the shortage of funds.
Earlier, the university authorities had planned to install prefabricated structure for the new building, but that too was cancelled due to the paucity of funds. Later, a proposal was made to shift it to some other rented building, but that too could not materialise.
Jasminder Singh Dhillon, Director, PURC, Muktsar, said, “The amount of Rs 50 lakh have been sanctioned for the renovation of the PURC building. The work has started and is scheduled to be completed in three months. The roofs and walls of the existing building will be repaired. Besides, the library will be shifted to the ground floor and washrooms will be repaired.”
Last year a proposal was moved to shift the PURC, Muktsar, to the Panjab University Rural Centre (PURC) at Kauni village in the Gidderbaha Assembly segment near here and merge both the centres. However, it triggered a major controversy and the idea was dropped. A team of senior officials from Chandigarh too had visited here to seek opinion of the students, staff and locals in this regard.
