Gobind Singh Longowal elected new President of SGPC, defeats Amrik Singh Shahpur

Amritsar , November 29, 2017 : Senior Akali leader and former Minister has been elected the president of the SGPC by defeating Amrik Singh Shapur  with a big margin of votes. Longowal hot 154 votes while Shahpur couild only 15 votes. He replaced Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar  who completed his  one year term this month.

The decision to elect the president was the result of the voting for the Sikh religious body known as the Parliament of the Sikhs.

169 members were present in the meeting out of total number of 178 members of the General House .

The meeting began after performing Ardas  in the present of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

Jathedar Akal Takhat  and Jathedars of four Takhats were also present bu they did not vote as per tradition.

Hardip Singh Mohali boycotted  the election alleging that both the factions are doing politics.
