Govt initiates action against state medical council chief

Date:

Chandigarh, January 31: Taking cognisance of The Tribune report on the MCI cancelling the registration of Punjab Medical Council (PMC) president Dr Amar Satinder Singh Sekhon, the government today asked the council to act against him.The Tribune had, on January 23, highlighted that Dr Sekhon was holding the post despite the fact that his registration was cancelled by the Medical Council of India (MCI) for allegedly furnishing false information.

It was also highlighted that rules don’t permit a person whose registration is cancelled to hold the post.Sources said Sanjay Kumar, Principal Secretary, Medical Education and Research, today forwarded the MCI communication to the PMC; Director, Medical Education and Research; and the Vice-Chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), Faridkot, for necessary action doctors indicted by the MCI.

Dr Sekhon is also a member of the Board of Governors of the BFUHS. The Medical Council of India has suspended Dr Sekhon’s registration for three years from February 13, 2017, to February 12, 2020. The case pertains to 2005, when Dr Sekhon was principal of the Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Bathinda.

He had allegedly furnished false information to an MCI inspection team. He had claimed that Dr Muktanjali Arya was a full-time teacher of microbiology at the institute. But she was working at a private hospital in Ludhiana. Both Dr Sekhon and Sanjay Kumar could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.

The cancellation of registration of Dr Sekhon by the MCI has cast a shadow on the decisions taken by him as PMC president in the past over six months. Experts say it is legally untenable to continue the decisions taken by Dr Sekhon. “It will be difficult for any government to defend the decisions in any court of law, which are taken by a person who isn’t eligible to hold the post,” said Punjab and Haryana High Court lawyer HC Arora. Dr Sekhon has taken some important decision like reversing the decision of the previous executive committee, which had imposed penalties on several doctors for allegedly indulging in unethical practices.
