Chandigarh, February 19, 2018: Haryana Government has announced to hold the elections to the students bodies in Universities and colleges of the state from next session. Captain Bhupinder Singh OSD to CM Haryana, in a press release said that the state government decided to allow the conduct of elections to the student bodies from the next academic session 2018-2019.
Elections for student unions in the state had not been after 1996, when these were stopped by then Bansi Lal government. Present Education Minister Ram Bilas was Education Minister then too.
Haryana BJP, during state assembly elections of 2014 had promised to hold these elections after coming to power.
It may be recalled that Punjab had banned the elections to student bodies in 1984 during Sikh militancy days.
No such election was allowed since then despite the repeated promises of SAD, Congress and other political parties during Punjab Assembly elections. Will Punjab follow Haryana now?
