Heavy snowfall hits school, commute; mercury set to plunge across Alberta

Date:

Calgarians woke up Tuesday to find anywhere from 10 to 30 centimetres of snow blanketing their homes — setting up a nightmarish post-long-weekend commute.

The city was under an Environment Canada snowfall warning until about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, as a light dusting continued to fall on Calgary.

Calgary police were called to 142 crashes between midnight and 4 p.m. Tuesday. Eight of those involved an injury, and 17 were hit-and-runs. Crashes on major highways blocked lanes and hampered drivers, including multiple collisions on 16th Avenue N.E
