Illegal mining: Ropar cop’s attackers go scot-free

Date:

Ropar, May 14: The mining mafia has once again showed its “might” in the district. Its clout can be gauged from the fact that the police are reluctant to book the assailants of a cop.

While Jaswant Singh, a constable posted at Kiratpur Sahib police station, alleged that he suffered injury on his jaw after being hit by the driver, the local Station House Officer (SHO) claimed that the constable was injured due to fall while chasing the vehicle.

Sources say goons of mining mafia active in this area are close to a senior politician and a senior police officer posted outside the district. They claim that the said politician looks after all such activities at the behest of his senior in the party.

Following the incident, Jaswant Singh had told The Tribune that he had intercepted a tipper loaded with sand at Kiratpur Sahib on Thursday night. He had alleged that first the driver attacked them and fled the spot and later his accomplices roughed them up and forcibly took away the tipper.

He had also said they did not retaliate apprehending more trouble. And his apprehensions were not exaggerated as his seniors failed to act against the accused.

Kiratpur Sahib SHO Kulbir Singh Kang said in his statement constable Jaswant Singh had mentioned that he got injured due to falling while chasing the tipper driver, hence no case was registered against him for attacking a police official.

Jaswant Singh could not be contacted despite repeated efforts. Ropar Senior Superintendent of Police Raj Bachan Singh Sandhu said he would look into the matter.
