Indian Army to bear medical expenses of Punjab boxer Kaur Singh

Chandigarh, December 19: Within its forceful posturing that serves its purpose of being the guards of country’s precarious borders, the army also harbors a soft core.
Taking cognizance of a report carried by The Times of India about ailing boxing legend Kaur Singh, the Indian Army has paid an amount of Rs 5.27 lakh to the private hospital where Singh was undergoing treatment.

In a communication to the TOI on Monday, the Western Command headquarters of the army also confirmed that the monthly cost of Rs eight thousand, incurred on Singh’s medicines, would also being paid by it.

Kaur Singh had served in the army and had retired from the rank of subedar from the Sikh regiment.

The Western Command authorities confirmed, “On reading the media report, the army’s outreach team met Kaur Singh in his village. Singh is an army pensioner receiving a monthly pension of Rs 33,000 and was entitled to unlimited medical support through Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS)”. It was stated that Rupees Five Lakhs Twenty Seven Thousand had been paid recently to the Grecian Super Specialty Hospital where he was undergoing treatment.

Sources in army also confirmed that the authorities had also paid him Rs 3 lakh that was needed for his treatment on previous occasion.

The Western Command headquarters also confirmed that after meeting the officers from the command, Kaur Singh had told that the army was the only organization that has taken care of him and his family.
