Khushwant helped defuse tension post Bluestar: Capt

Date:

New Delhi, August 8: Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday hailed author and journalist Khushwant Singh as a firm believer in the truth and recalled the crucial role played by him in defusing tension in the state after Operation Bluestar.
After launching a book on the late writer, the CM said Khushwant was a prominent member of the team assigned the job of cooling tempers after the 1984 operation.

On the writer’s support to the Emergency and the then Congress government’s sterilisation programme, Capt Amarinder said although the method used was debatable, there was no doubt that population explosion was a cause for concern.
The launch of the book, “Khushwant Singh: In Wisdom and in Jest” — written by Vijay Narain Shankar and Onkar Singh — was also attended by former Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee.
Debunking the view that Khushwant was an agnostic, the CM said the writer was against ritualism, not religion.
