Killer SUV: No clue of co-accused, motive

Date:

Amritsar/ Tarn Taran, Sept 12: Two days after two cops were run over by a speeding SUV at a checkpoint near Amarkot village in Tarn Taran, many questions remain unanswered.

While reports suggest that there were more than one occupant in the vehicle and the circumstantial evidence was allegedly manipulated to shield the culprits. But the reports could not be substantiated for the want of any evidence.

The CCTV footage, which was of poor quality, failed to establish anything as it just showed that the vehicle was moving at a high speed. The same vehicle later ran over two cops at a naka. Karanvir Singh was arrested, who the police claim was driving the vehicle and was drunk at the time of the incident.

There are a number of loopholes in the police story. The fact that the vehicle was coming from border side and ran over two cops when signalled to stop is bound to raise doubts that it was carrying something illegal, may be drugs.

Former SAD MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha said: “If Karanvir was heavily drunk, how he managed to escape? He is physically challenged, while a video of the incident on the social media shows the accused running away swiftly. The matter needs to be investigated thoroughly.”

Another point that has come to the fore is that if Karanvir accidentally killed the cops, why he has been booked in a murder case. Locals say one more person was travelling in the SUV, who escaped from the spot with a bag, but the police said there was no evidence at the moment.

IG Border range, SPS Parmar said: “We will not spare anyone having any role in the incident. Every aspect is being looked into, including the smuggling angle.”
