We’re bombarded with impossible love stories on TV all the time but, sometimes, the actors behind these have better love stories in real life. Despite their hectic schedules and the struggles that come with fame, there are couples who’ve managed to make their marriage work. In focus today is one such jodi – Ravi Dubey and Sargun Mehta.
Ravi met Sargun on the sets of the latter’s debut show 12/24 Karol Bagh in 2009. Their journey together began as onscreen lovebirds and eventually, this romance turned into reality.
In an old interview with a newspaper, Sargun recalled their first meeting: “He was to play this mentally retarded guy [sic]; they showed me photographs of the look test, and my reaction was chee. So, I was expecting this really odd looking guy on the sets.” But, she was in for a surprise: “We were to shoot the promo; Ravi knocked on my vanity door, dressed in this red jacket, looking cool and cute. My first reaction was – who is this cute guy? That’s when I realised he was to play my husband”.
On the other hand, Ravi told another daily that he found her ‘extremely lively and vibrant’, but Sargun found him too reserved. “Later, of course, we realised we are very similar, which is how we got attracted to each other,” he added. A few days into the shoot, they fell in love.
When the actress was asked who took the initiative and said those three magical words, she said: “Nobody did! In fact, we came to Bombay, realised that we had become more than just friends. And then one day we suddenly felt it. He said don’t you think we are like dating. And I said yeah, I guess we are dating – so we just began dating”. That’s uncomplicated!
After five months of courtship, Sargun made their relationship official and they went on to become one of the most loved couples of Indian TV.
As far as romance is concerned, Sargun describes herself as a Jane Austen heroine and Ravi as the most non-romantic person ever. “I remember it was my birthday and he came in saying that I will get my gift in two days and how he couldn’t carry it. I was super excited. The next day I got a delivery for a washing machine and a TV. It was truly bizarre,” the actress recalled.
But, it’s not like Ravi didn’t try his hand at romance. He planned a filmy proposal for her on the sets of Nach Baliye Season 5, the dance reality show they were part of, in December 2012. After their performance, the Jamai Raja actor went down on one knee and popped the question with a solitaire ring on national television.
Almost a year after Nach Baliye, the couple tied the knot in a traditional Hindu wedding on December 7, 2013. Talking about a memorable moment from their D-Day, Ravi had told a leading entertainment daily: “The most beautiful moment was when I was on the podium for the jai mala. I saw Sargun being carried on a doli. There were these golden lights around her and she looked beautiful. It was a very surreal moment, one that I can never forget”.
It’s been almost five years since they got married. One look at their Instagram and you’ll know that they’re still going strong. In several interviews, they’ve spoken about how they’re extremely proud of each other.. According to Sargun, their mantra of a successful marriage and what has helped them survive as a couple is the fact that they’re friends first and then, partners. Also, they believe in giving each other space to breathe, which helps them grow as individuals.
