Mamata Banerjee sanctions Rs 2 lakh compensation for immersion deaths

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has sanctioned Rs 2 lakh compensation each to the families of five persons who died in an incident of boat capsize during immersion of the Durga idol at Beldanga 1 block in Murshidabad district on Monday.

While stating this here today, West Bengal home department added that the compensation amounts were being disbursed immediately.

The accident took place when a boat carrying a huge clay idol of Durga overturned in Beldanga’s Dumnidaha Lake. The deceased – the eldest of whom was of 34 years of age and the youngest 20 years – were reportedly quite drunk at the time of the accident.
