Nine arrested for running marriage racket

Date:

Abohar, February 28: The Rajasthan Police busted a fake marriage racket allegedly masterminded by Sriganganagar-based marriage bureau head Maya Jain.

Nine persons — Kamaldeep Kaur alias Khushi and Ranjeet Kaur of Bathinda; Ram Nath of Fazilka; Sunita, Manju, Maya Jain, Jagmohan of Sriganganagar; Mohinder and Durga Dutt of Nangali Gujran — were arrested under Section 420 of the IPC.

Today, officials said that all of them were produced in a court at Jhunjhunu on Monday. Kamaldeep Kaur was sent to Nari Niketan and the others were remanded in judicial custody.

The police acted on a complaint lodged on Saturday by Kailash Chander of Nangali Jagran village that he had married Kamaldeep against a payment of Rs 1.8 lakh on February 12.

On Saturday, marriage bureau chief Maya and her accomplices told him to let Kamaldeep accompany them, claiming that the marriage was to last a week only.

As the police began probing, another local resident Suresh Chander also complained that he too had paid Rs 1.8 lakh for marriage with Sunita and was now being forced to let her go.

The interrogation indicated that the gang had been cheating persons aged between 35 and 40 years by arranging fake marriages.
