After Uttar Pradesh, NITI Aayog to help plan Punjab development

Date:

New Delhi, June 7: NITI Aayog will chalk out a plan for development of Punjab, just as it did for Uttar Pradesh, to help the Congress-ruled state address its laggard areas and lay down a roadmap for upliftment on various social indices.

The plan, which will have a medium and long-term outlook, will initially focus on low-hanging fruits or projects than can be completed with minimum but focused intervention. The government’s premier think tank will study in detail the primary issues holding back development in the state and suggest remedial measures, a senior government official told ET, requesting not to be identified.

“A high-level team led by the Aayog’s vice chairman, Arvind Panagariya, will shortly visit the state to meet the chief minister and his top officials to discuss the weak areas and what needs to be done by Punjab to enter the league of top performing states,” the official said.

The Aayog, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is also expected to lend an ear to the state’s problems related to central ministries, if any, the official said.
