No certainty on Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to India

Date:

New Delhi, February 24

Officials in New Delhi have discounted reports of Chinese President Xi Jinping visiting India for the BRICS summit on grounds that it is too early to reach that conclusion.

They pointed out that talk of Xi visiting India was based on the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson extending China’s support to the BRICS summit that will be hosted by India in rotation.

However, neither has the date for the summit been firmed up nor is it clear whether it will be an in-person summit or held virtually like the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). Anyway, virtually no leader of the BRICS grouping has so far travelled outside their countries due to the Covid pandemic.
